USGS: Science for a Changing World

GROUND-WATER AND WATER-CHEMISTRY DATA FOR THE WILLAMETTE BASIN, OREGON

U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigation Report 99-4036

HOW TO USE THIS WEBSITE

This Web site contains data tables, graphs, and GIS data layers to accompany the text of the report.

Clickable maps are provided to allow easy access to graphs of water-level data for observation wells and graphs of geophysical logs. When the cursor is placed over a linked site on a clickable map, your Web browser will display the file name for a graph of the well data. The file name is an abbreviation of the Oregon Water Resources Department's well log id. Both Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator display the file name in the status bar at the bottom of the screen, if the status bar has been enabled. When a site on a map is clicked, a graph of the data will display. ASCII data files and alternative image formats for the graphs are listed below the map.

Updated water-levels and graphs for wells may be obtained on the USGS Oregon District Willamette Basin Ground-Water Study Web page.

Data are presented as:

ASCII data tables are in spaces-delimited format and can be accessed by most Web browsers, text editors, and word processors and can be imported by most spreadsheets and databases.

GIS datasets are in ARC/INFO native format, ARC/INFO.E00 format, ArcView shapefiles, and Spatial Data Transfer Files (SDTS).

ARC/INFO native and .E00 formats may be used by ARC/INFO and some other GIS software packages. ARCVIEW shapefiles can be viewed using ArcView or ARC/INFO software or you can download a free version of ArcExplorer. ArcExplorer is a 32-bit, stand-alone software application (not a plug-in for your Web browser), that displays and queries locally stored GIS data. ArcExplorer can be downloaded from the ESRI Web site, Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. NOTE: ArcExplorer is only available for Windows and Solaris Unix.

SDTS Topological Vector Profile files were produced from ARC/INFO coverages with the SDTSEXPORT utility of ARC/INFO. The files store the feature geometry (shape and location) and attributes for each feature. SDTS files are software-independent and can be imported by many GIS software packages. SDTS file names are explained here.

Image files of selected maps and hydrographs are provided in TIFF, GIF, JPEG, and PNG formats. TIFF map files have registration information for display in ESRI products and other GIS viewers. Image files are accessible using your web browser or other image-viewing software.
