- Abstract:
-
This digital map represents the locations of 4,755 wells and 1 spring in the Willamette Basin, Oregon. Locations for these sites
were determined by digitizing plotted locations of wells and springs from U.S.G.S. 1:24,000 scale topographical quadrangles documented in
U.S. Geological Survey reports, and by translating locations recorded in National Water Information System (NWIS), a national computer
database maintained by U.S. Geological Survey. In addition to locations, general information about the well or spring site was compiled
and recorded. The 4,755 wells and 1 spring were chosen for data collection and analysis to delineate the extent and thickness of
hydrogeologic units in the basin, and to provide data on water levels, water chemistry, and water use. These data were collected and
compiled as part of several historical studies of the ground-water resources of the Willamette River Basin, Oregon conducted by
U.S. Geological Survey and the Oregon Water Resources Department. Data items associated with each site can be used to identify
(1) if a well was included in an observation network maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey or Oregon Water Resources Department,
(2) to distinguish between a well or spring, (3) indicate water-chemistry data are available, and (4) indicate if a water-level
measurements were made for a well. The values are valid at the time the information was recorded to the CD-ROM and these
values for a well or spring may have changed.
- Purpose:
-
The digital map depicts the locations of 4,755 wells and 1 spring in the Willamette Basin, Oregon compiled by the U.S. Geological Survey
in cooperative studies with the Oregon Water Resources Department. These sites were field-located in previous U.S. Geological Survey and
Oregon Water Resources Department studies and have not been revisited. The sites were chosen to provide information on the ground-water
resources of the Willamette River Basin. The sites were used to delineate the extent and thickness of hydrogeologic units in the basin,
and to provide data on water levels, water chemistry, and water use.

Accuracy of the attributes were not determined by manual comparison of the source with information documented in U.S. Geological Survey reports
and from information recorded in National Water Information System (NWIS), a national computer database maintained by the
U.S. Geological Survey. In addition, manual comparisons were not made to water well reports (well logs) provided by Oregon Water Resources
Department that contain general information associated with each well.
- Logical_Consistency_Report:
-
Entity points representing wells and springs each have one associated data record of thematic attributes, including organization and
location identifiers, use parameters, and water sampling information. Points are generated, collated, and stored in
ESRI's ARC/INFO GIS software, in single precision coordinates (1e-3) irrespective of input precision. The data was not checked for
duplicates nor were the values for the approximately 40 attributes verified. Duplicate sites may exist with different identity attributes
for several reasons. 1) The paper documentation (NWIS schedules) for some of wells can not be found to determine if these are duplicates.
2) Some of the sites have computer-program generated location name (LOCATION item) based on a township/range dataset. 3) The NWIS site ID number
(SITEID item) comprises latitude and longitude coordinates and a sequence number (the last two numbers of which are different). Most
historical well locations were taken from maps of different scales such as U.S. Geological Survey 7 1/2 and 15 minute quadrangles and therefore
the latitude and longitude coordinates that were computed could significantly differ.
- Completeness_Report:
-
Selected data for 4,755 wells and 1 spring were taken from about 5,996 field-located wells and springs in the Willamette Basin, Oregon
that were compiled from U.S. Geological Survey and Oregon Water Resources Department sources. Approximately 110,000 wells have been
drilled in the Willamette Basin, Oregon. Only wells and springs that were visited by personnel from the U.S. Geological Survey and
Oregon Water Resources Department were included.

-
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
-
- Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:

Location accuracy for the wells and springs varies upon the source of the location information. An overall estimate would be
that each location is within approximately +- 500 meters.
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
-
- Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:

Land surface elevations for the wells and springs varies upon the source of the altitude information. An overall estimate would be
that most sites are within approximately +- 50 feet from topographical map. Values for hole depth assigned to each well were taken from
water well reports filed by the driller with the state of Oregon along with any deepenings that were recorded. Land surface elevations
for each site were interpolated from U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 scale topographical quadrangle maps. Well depth are within
+- 1 foot provided no caving or construction problems occurred that might reduced the recorded depth.

These well locations were digitized from coordinates plotted on U.S. Geological Survey 1:24,000 scale topographical quadrangles or
generated using coordinates from a Global Positioning System. The locations were checked for position by comparing plots of the
digitial data to the locations plotted on the quadrangles or to coordinates from the GPS. Well and spring information was compiled
from U.S. Geological Survey sources, from records in National Water Information System (NWIS), and from paper schedules generating
during past studies conducted by U.S. Geological Survey and the Oregon Water Resources Department.

The system used for locating wells and springs in this report is based on the rectangular system for subdivision of
public land. The State is divided into 36 square mile townships numbered according to their location relative to the
east-west Willamette baseline and the north-south Willamette meridian.
Each township is divided into 36 sections approximately one square mile (640-acre) in area and numbered from 1 to 36.
For example, a well designated as 01S/03E-33DCA is located in Township 1 south, Range 3 east, section 33. The letters
following the section number correspond to the location within the section; the first letter (D) identifies the quarter
section (160 acres); the second letter (C) identifies the quarter-quarter section (40 acres); and the third letter (A)
identifies the quarter-quarter-quarter section (10-acres). Thus, well 33DCA is located in the NE quarter of the SW
quarter of the SE quarter of section 33. When more than one designated well occurs in the quarter-quarter-quarter
section, a serial number is included. For some wells that were field located during previous USGS and OWRD studies,
a different system of letters following the section number was used for the location within the section.
This system assigns a letter to one of 16 quarter-quarter sections (40 acres) that divide the section. The location
33DCA would correspond to the location 33Q. When more than one designated well occurs in the quarter-quarter section,
a serial number is included.

- Overview_Description:
-
- Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
-
Several attributes were assigned to the spatial location of each well and spring. The
definitions of each attributes are recorded in the data files accompanying the digital
file. Three main attributes were used to organize these data. Two of the attributes are
unique to each well or spring and serve as keys to search these data for specific well
or spring.
