BACKGROUND:

A shallow alluvial aquifer provides drinking water for the approximately 14,000 residents of areas in southern Deschutes County and northern Klamath County near La Pine, Oregon (map). The majority of the residents get their drinking water from wells less than 100 ft deep. Most homes in the area also use on-site wastewater disposal systems. Groundwater sampling has revealed elevated concentrations of nitrate in some private domestic wells, raising concern for the vulnerability of the groundwater resource. This concern led the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (ODEQ) and Deschutes County to seek the assistance of the USGS in evaluating past and future effects of on-site wastewater disposal practices on groundwater quality.

HYDROLOGIC AND GEOCHEMICAL INVESTIGATIONS:

In response to the need for a better scientific understanding of the movement, fate, and transport of nitrogen in groundwater, the USGS has undertaken several investigations in the La Pine area of southern Deschutes and northern Klamath Counties.
